Metal Roofs

In early times, metal roofing used in the form of corrugated galvanized iron was a light weight, portable and durable material. This was especially useful in developing countries, and is still used today in many places. In particular metal is widely used to cover large buildings due to its high strength to weight ratio. Stainless steel, copper, zinc, aluminium and lead sheeting are highly durable and form protective patinas on the surface through oxidation. Often the metal sheeting is produced for roofing as an alloy, or combination of one or more of these metals, which is designed to confer greater durability and strength than the individual metals alone.

In the UK we often speak of leadwork which is generally used on buildings where thin lead flashing is needed, and is more usually found on public buildings where extension work has been carried out to domestic properties.

There are certain drawbacks in using metal as a roofing material. Being an excellent conductor of heat, care must be taken to provide for thermal movement, particularly when dealing with a large area. Furthermore such movement will cause unwanted creaking noises with changes in temperature. One of the more alarming disadvantages with metal roofing is that different metals when placed together can cause rapid corrosion, so great care must be taken to avoid such contact.

With regard to maintenance, metal roofs will need to be re-coated once the factory finish has worn away, and this will have to be done on a regular basis.
