How to Repair a Felted Flat Roof

So you want to repair a flat roof and you want to know how. Here’s a few tips we’ve gathered after years of doing roof repairs.
A flat roof differs from a sloped roof in one regard. Water runs off a sloped roof but a flat roof must have a watertight seal to prevent leaking. A single crack in a flat roof can cause expensive damage.

The 8 Step Flat Roof Repair Guides

1. Clean the roof of debris. Take a good stiff brush and sweep all the dirt away. You will be using roofing cement and it will not stick to a dirty surface.

2. Take a sharp knife and cut around the damaged area. Make sure to cut a regular pattern like a square.

3. The cut out of the dame will act as a pattern. Cut out the replacment material using your pattern.

4. Cut out another piece of roofing material only 5cm larger.

5. Use a thin knife, a putty knife is ideal, to slip under the edges of the cutout area and apply roofing cement.

6. Spread a layer of roofing cement over the cut out layer.

7. Press the new roofing material over the cement and tack down with roofing nails. Cement only the bottom layer and use nails for the top layer.

8. Go around the edges of the topmost layer with cement. You’re looking to create a seal.
